
Michael R. Ortwein
Michael joined Focus in 2001 as its primary operational manager handling all aspects of the investment and development process. Michael brings 30 years of commercial real estate investment and development experience to the Focus team. ​Previously, Michael served as a development manager at Koll Development San Diego, and a Manager in the Strategic Consulting Group of Ernst & Young Kenneth Leventhal.

​Michael holds an MBA from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business and a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Michael served as a committee member of the NAIOP Real Estate Challenge, and as a guest lecturer at the USC MRED program. Michael lives in Newport Beach with his wife Ashley and their two children.

Jack D. Kappe
Joining Focus in 2012, Jack brings over 25 years of experience in commercial real estate including the acquisition and asset management of over $2.0 billion in commercial, hospitality and multi-family properties. Prior to joining Focus, Jack served in director and acquisition roles at CBRE Global Investors, Buchanan Street Partners, Pacifica Capital Group, and Alvarez & Marsal Capital Real Estate.

Jack holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA in Business and Economics. He is a member of the Wharton Club of Southern California and is a NAIOP Forum member. Jack lives in Manhattan Beach with his wife Tanya and their two children.

Richard M. Ortwein
A seasoned veteran of the real estate industry and founding member of Focus Real Estate, Dick brings more than 50 years of experience to the company, including 20 years as President of Koll Development Company. Dick served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, Chairman of the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Young Presidents Organization, and president of NAIOP.

Dick is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California’s Master of Real Estate Development program. Dick and his wife Sheila live in Newport Beach and enjoy spending time with their seven grandchildren.
